Jack Toolin’s work My Space for Your Life is currently being exhibited at the University of Nevada, Reno, as part of the Iraqi Memorial exhibition. This work employs the viral nature of the social networking site Facebook to raise awareness regarding the issue of civilian deaths during the Iraq invasion/occupation. Memorial Facebook pages have been created for nearly twenty Iraqi victims, the avatars for which feature photographs of volunteers standing in for the person being memorialized. Through ‘friending’ these memorial pages, the Facebook community spreads the concern for this often overlooked aspect of military conflict. Planning is underway to tour the exhibition.
