At this year’s CAA conference, Professor Frima Hofrichter sat on the Committee for the Distinguished Feminist Award. This year, the award was presented to the noted artist and book illustrator, Faith Ringgold. The above image is an illustration from her first book, Tar Beach, which was a Caldecott honor book and the winner of the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration.
From the CAA Awards pamphlet:
In her work Ringgold brought a variety of techniques and media from stitchery to quilting, to drawing and painting to construct narratives from a black woman’s perspective and narratives that were frequently autobiographical either in fact or in aspiration. She not only captured the strength of black women fighting slavery, oppression and sexual exploitation, but also chronicled the dreams of black women who sought to transcend circumstance and find a brighter future.
Professor Hofrichter will continue to participate on the committee for the next two years.
