Open Class Session with Artist Zoe Beloff on April 24th, Tuesday, 10:15am, MMB, RSVP ep2038@columbia.edu
You are welcome to join our classroom session with the artist and media archaeologist Zoe Beloff. Working in a variety of media such as film, installation, performance but also stereoscopic projection, electroacoustics and other reincarnations of nineteenth-century mediums and media, Beloff reminds us that new media are conditioned by perpetual state of death, decay and obsolescence.
Rarely shown on account of the historical specificities of its technical set-up, this glimpse into Beloff’s work in analog 3D tech is made possible by close collaboration with technicians at Pratt’s Library.

Augustine was the most extensively photographed of the young women hysterics at the Salpêtrière in Paris of the 1870’s She was ‘the Sarah Bernhardt’ of the asylum. This is her story.
Zoe works as a filmmaker and artist. Each project aims to connect the present to past so that it might illuminate the future in new ways. Her projects include “The Coney Island Amateur Psychoanalytic Society and its Circle 1926-1972”, “The Days of the Commune” , “A World Redrawn: Eisenstein and Brecht in Hollywood” and most recently “Exile”. Her work has been featured in international exhibitions and screenings; venues include MoMA, The Whitney Museum, Site Santa Fe, the M HKA museum in Antwerp, the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Freud Dream Museum in St Petersburg. She has been awarded fellowships from thee Graham Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The Radcliffe Institute at Harvard and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is a Professor in the Departments of Media Studies and Art at Queens College.
