Dr. Kim Bobier’s article published in the spring 2024 issue of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s journal, American Art.
In this article, Dr. Bobier explores how Crystal Z Campbell’s multimedia installation Model Citizen: Here I Stand (2018–19) revisits the monitored life of Paul Robeson. Dr. Bobier’s analysis of this work links critical race art history and visual cultural studies with the field of surveillance studies. In so doing, she argues that Model Citizen correlates established conventions for visualizing the human figure with established methods for monitoring Black bodies.
