About the Project:  Focusing on the Dutch graphic design collective Wild Plakken and their designs for the “Culture in Another South Africa” conference (CASA), held in Amsterdam in 1987, this talk examines the role of graphic design in the dissemination of socio-political discourses of memory and colonialism in the 1980s’ Netherlands. This talk is adapted from one chapter of a larger PhD research project which situates the designs of Wild Plakken within the visual and political networks of new social movements in the Netherlands between the mid-1970s and the early 1990s.About the Speaker: Alex J. Todd is a design historian and a visiting instructor in the History of Art and Design department at Pratt Institute. Alex received his MA from the Royal College of Art in London, with a dissertation on the work of Dutch poster designer Anthon Beeke, and is currently a final year PhD student in the History of Art and Design department at the University of Brighton, UK. Alex is also the Student Officer for the Design History Society and co-lead, with Dr. Harriet Atkinson, of the Design Activism strand of the Centre for Design History.
