Professor Marsha Morton Co-chairing a Panel on Art and Medicine at CAA 2024

Professor Marsha Morton co-chaired with Patricia Berman a session at the CAA conference this February (2024).  The panel, “Health, Illness, and the Art of Medicine,” examined art in Germany between c. 1880 and 1930 at a time when the country was at the forefront of medical advances and a popular hygienic culture flourished that resulted in the rise of spas, exercise regimes, and homeopathy.  Papers included studies of the medicalized body in illustrated children’s books, hygiene exhibition films, photography (Gerhard Riebicke. left), and paintings of surgery (Christian Schad, right).
